
For those interested in literature, Grimstad has a lot to offer. Henrik Ibsen lived there as a young man, and Knut Hamsun settled on the Nørholm farm near the town in his old age.
In 1843, Henrik Ibsen left Skien to become an apothecary's apprentice in Grimstad and stayed there until he left for Kristiania in 1850.
In Grimstad, the pharmacy building has become a museum that tells the story of this important period in Henrik Ibsen's life. It was in Grimstad that he made his debut as a playwright with Catilina, made friends who were to mean a great deal to him, and it was here that he became a father for the first time. Both the museum and the library in Grimstad often organize events about Henrik Ibsen's life and works.

Grimstad municipality is home to the spectacular outdoor theater Fjæreheia Amfi, which hosts concerts and performances of various kinds, often by Ibsen. At the end of July 2024, Henrik Ibsen's Brand will be performed in Fjæreheia.
