Ibsen Theatre is the regional theater for Telemark and Vestfold, and an important part of Ibsenbyen Skien.

Ibsen Theatre was established in 1975 under the name Telemark Theatre. Telemark Theatre changed its name to Ibsen Theatre in 1991, when it became the regional theater for Telemark and Vestfold. Ibsen Theatre then became the local theater for all of Vestfold and Telemark, and most performances visit a dozen places in both counties. Ibsen Theatre puts on performances for both children and adults, and aims to develop new drama in large and small formats.

Until 2010, Festiviteten in the center of Skien was the theater's permanent venue. Despite the historic atmosphere in the old venerable building, the need for a more modern and functional theater eventually became great, and in 2011 Teater Ibsen welcomed to new premises in Union's old factory on Klosterøya.

Ibsen Theatre and Henrik Ibsen

Teater Ibsen is, as the name suggests, named after Henrik Ibsen, and the aim is to stage plays that give the audience experiences they remember. With the 200th anniversary coming up and Henrik Ibsen's ever-increasing relevance, Ibsen's plays will be an important part of Teater Ibsen's repertoire in the years to come.

Ibsen Theatre also manages and runs Ibsen Scope (formerly Ibsen Awards).
