The Henrik Ibsen Museum at Venstøp is Ibsen's childhood home and an important part of Ibsenbyen Skien.

Henrik Ibsen Museum is part of Telemark Museum and is located on the Venstøp farm in Gjerpen, five kilometers north of the city center. This was Ibsen's childhood home from the age of seven to 15. The museum focuses on Ibsen's childhood and schooling, and shows how much this period in his life meant for his life and poetry.

The farm consists of the listed main building from 1815, a brewhouse, boys' room, barn and storehouse. It is located in a beautiful cultural landscape in Gjerpensdalen in Skien. The outdoor area is ideal for a rest, and a skittle alley has been built in the garden, similar to the one that was there in Henry's time. In a separate room, there are dress-up clothes for children and they can also play puppet theater. The Henrik Ibsen Museum has both a souvenir shop and a cozy café.

Don't miss the Peer Gynt Escape Room, where the whole family can learn and test their knowledge of the famous play. 2024 is the last summer this offer is available at Venstøp.

From 2025 until the anniversary year of 2028, the entire museum will be closed for refurbishment.

Venstøp and Henrik Ibsen

Naturally, Venstøp is an important part of the Ibsen town of Skien. The Ibsen family first lived in Stockmanngården by the market square, then in Altenburggården further up the town, before moving out into the countryside in 1834 to the farm Venstøp. Venstøp is the only one of Henrik Ibsen's homes in Skien that still exists today. Right now, work is underway to return the farm to the way it looked when the Ibsen family actually lived there, and the barn is being converted into a modern museum. The work will be completed by the anniversary year 2028.
