World premiere at Peeropolis

Peeropolis is a co-production between the Peer Gynt Cultural Festival, Teater Innlandet and Teater Ibsen. The performance will also be performed on August 8 and 9. Peeropolis will continue on tour with Teater Innlandet in February 2027 and Teater Ibsen in 2027 or 2028. The performance will also be a guest at the Nationaltheatret during the Ibsen Festival 2026.

Peeropolis is a poetic and musical journey into Peer's inner universe. With the star trio Maria Kristine Hildonen, Sjur Miljeteig and Elisabeth Mørland Nesset on stage, the audience experiences a pure and dense interpretation of Ibsen's text - where words and music merge.

When only Peer's voice remains

In our time, it seems that one of the most important things for people is to own their own history, to hold on to and communicate their truth. We want to give Peer Gynt the same opportunity.

Ibsen's dramatic poem is a portrait of a dreamer and a liar, an elusive figure who is always on the go, always self-sufficient. What happens when we remove everyone around him and listen only to Peer's thoughts and reflections, observations and illusions? When no one corrects him, no one judges him, no one loves him? With Ibsen's monologues, Peeropolis attempts to tread the path from the wild promises of youth to the quiet accounting of old age.

In our version, the music is Peer's only antagonist and the text is performed by a young, female actor. Can this open up new interpretations and give us new perspectives on Ibsen's text?

We have cut away everything that limits us to concrete, physical action and moved the text into a universe where only Peer's voice is heard.

The performance is an examination of self-image and self-narrative, how we construct our own life story, and what we leave behind when we die.

World premiere on new stage at Gålå

Peeropolis will premiere on a new stage at the Peer Gynt Arena during the Peer Gynt Culture Festival on August 4, 2026.

– Peeropolis will be performed in a new and intimate arena at Gålåvatnet. The festival is growing, and we believe that the unique environment we already invite our audience to is an important part of the festival experience. Peer Gynt at Gålå will occupy the main arena from mid-July to mid-August, and we are now testing a new temporary amphitheater for 400 people in close proximity to the main arena, says May Brit Støve, CEO of Peer Gynt AS.

Peeropolis will continue on tour with Teater Innlandet in February 2027 and Teater Ibsen in 2027 or 2028. The performance will also be a guest at the National Theatre during the Ibsen Festival in 2026.

Created modern theater history – now Peer Gynt awaits in a new form

The trio Maria Kristine Hildonen, Elisabeth Mørland Nesset and Sjur Miljeteig have distinguished themselves as a unique force in Norwegian theatre. Most recently in the critically acclaimed success Prima Facie. All three have also previously appeared in Peer Gynt at Gålå, Maria with the longest experience as both a volunteer and professional actor.

Artistic director of the Peer Gynt Culture Festival Erik Ulfsby looks forward to further collaboration with the trio:

– Maria has a big heart for Peer Gynt, and has been at Gålå for longer than most. She has a rare and deep understanding of the text and I am very pleased that she will have the opportunity to take a deep dive here with her fantastic musicians Sjur Miljeteig and Elisabeth Mørland Nesset. Together they created modern theatre history with Prima Facie, and we are very pleased that their next project will be Peeropolis, with a premiere during this summer's festival. This is also an important step on the road to becoming a larger and even more relevant festival towards the big anniversary in 2028.

Ulfsby describes Peeropolis as a performance where Peer's inner self is at the center:

– His conversations with himself, and his processing of inner and outer expressions are the foundation of the performance. Maria will give life and voice to this. It is a musical performance, and the three perform almost like a band, with Maria as a vocalist – without the songs, but Ibsen's texts, continues Ulfsby.

- A collective crush from day one

The trinity Elisabeth, Maria and Sjur say there has been a collective infatuation between them from day one.

-We are really excited and grateful that we get to continue our deep dive into the world's best theater text! It is a privilege to be able to tackle such great material and explore, play and spar with Ibsen, says the trio.

-We have great trust and enormous awe in each other's work, and we are each other's role models and simply find it childishly wonderful to work together. We are overjoyed at the chance to return to our beloved Gålå, where we have spent nearly twenty summers together.
