IBSENBYEN In Henrik Ibsen's time, Skien was a bustling trading town with around 3,000 inhabitants. Henrik Ibsen had roots in some of the city's most influential trading families, on both his mother's and father's sides. The young Ibsen was strongly influenced by the city, but much of the Skien he knew was lost when a great fire in 1886 destroyed large parts of the city centre. Today, Snipetorp is the only authentic urban environment that remains from his time, but fortunately there are also some preserved photographs that give us an insight into what Skien once looked like.
This evening, Jan Thore Øvrum takes us back to Skien in Ibsen's time. Øvrum is a true Skien enthusiast, and one of the city's leading speakers in local history. Through his engaging lecture, he will paint a vivid picture of Skien as the city was when Henrik Ibsen grew up – a city characterized by trade, pride and dramatic changes.
O-fag at Telemark Museum! Every first Thursday of the month we arrange the O-fag lecture series. A series of lectures, readings or performances within science, social studies, geography and history.
